Below is a list of classes you can take in the shop. Along with the classes is a description of what you can expect
in each class.
Calendar of events for the third trimester
Small
engines: Students must bring in their own small engine to work on during class time.
Introduction to technology: Students
will be working on electronics, ( burglar alarm) small engines they must bring in a small engine to work on. At the end of
March students will be creating a "shaker bench'
Introduction to Woodworking: Students will complete the red oak "night stand" in the
third trimester. If the students complete the " night stand " early, the students can work on another project with the time
remaining in school year.
Advanced Woodworking: Students will be continuing work on individual senior class projects.
INTROUCTION TO TECHNOLOGY
GRADE LEVEL: 9+v NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS: 3
REQUIREMENT: All students require a pair of safety glasses, notebook, pen and a mechanical pencil, project costs that
have to be covered by the student.
A basic course covering the following areas: drafting, basic electronics and electricity, woodworking, and metal working.
The student will learn free hand sketching, mechanical drafting and architectural drafting. The students will utilize hand
and power tools within the woodworking area.
INTRODUCTION TO WOODWORKING
GRADE LEVEL: 10+
NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS: 2
PREREQUISITE: Industrial Technology
OFFERED: Winter/Spring
This is a basic course covering hand and power tools, basic cabinet making techniques, and possible participation in a
mass production assignment. There is a fee associated with woodworking for lumber.
ADVANCED WOODWORKING
GRADE LEVEL: 12
NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS: 2
PREREQUISITE: B average in Intro to Woodworking or instructor's approval to take course.
OFFERED: Winter/Spring
REQUIREMENT: Tape measure
Students will be allowed to design and develop large projects within this class. Students will be exposed to a wide variety
of hand and power tools, and numerous methods of furniture making techniques. Participation in a mass production assignment
is mandatory. Students must have exhibited acceptable work habits in other industrial technology courses. There is a fee for
lumber associated with woodworking.
CONSTRUCTION
GRADE LEVEL: 12 NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS: 1
PREREQUISITE: Intro to Woodworking, Drafting, Engineering Technology
OFFERED: Fall/Winter
REQUIREMENT: Tape measure
LIMIT of 10 students (Students will be admitted with permission of the instructor.) The purpose of this module is to provide
introductory level content about construction. The activities of this module will provide students the basic building structures
and the components involved.
ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY
GRADE LEVEL: 10+ NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS: 1
PREREQUISITE: Industrial Technology
OFFERED: Fall or Winter or Spring
This is a comprehensive enginnering course. Students will develop insights into the application of technological concepts,
processes and systems. Students will examine various types of structures such as bridges and communication towers. Students
are expected to research, develop, and test various theories and scale models of various structures.
DRAFTING
GRADE LEVEL: 10+ NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS: 2
PREREQUISITE: Industrial Technology
OFFERED: Fall/Winter
The course will cover mechanical drawings and architectural drawings. Students will be exposed to CAD (computer aided
drafting/drawing) and three dimensional modeling and drawing.
COMUTER AIDED DESIGN
GRADE LEVEL: 12 NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS: 1
OFFERED: Fall or Winter or Spring
Students will independently learn the basic drafting functions associated with architectural and mechanical drafting while
using the computer. The areas covered under architectural drafting will be floor plans, elevations and the design of interior
structures. Mechanical drafting will cover isometric, oblique and orthographic drawings.
ELECTRONICS
GRADE LEVEL: 10+ NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS: 1
OFFERED: Fall or Winter or Spring
This is a basic course for students without any experience in electricity and electronics. Practical experience will be
gained through “hands-on” activities with electronic components and circuit assembly. Students will be
primarily working on DC (direct current) electronic projects.
COMPUTER GRAPHICS
GRADE LEVEL: 10+ NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS: 1
OFFERED: Fall or Winter or Spring
This course consists of visual communication with the use of Macintosh computers. Students will research, design, and
develop logos, letterheads, and various advertisements. Students will be using software programs that are currently used in
the visual communication industry.
METALS
GRADE LEVEL: 11+
NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS: 3
PREREQUISITE: Industrial Technology Metal working is a full year course.
The student will learn safety aspects and skills in the following areas: foundry, arc welding, oxyacetylene welding, ornamental
iron, sheet metal, forging, and metal lathe. This is designed to be a full year course. Students will not be permitted to
enroll for the second or third trimester without being in class the first and second trimesters.
**NOTE: Students taking auto mechanics in Independence must take Metals and Small Engines at East Buchanan as a prerequisite
to Independence's auto mechanics class. Small engines is a one trimester course, usually the last trimester of the year. The
student will learn the proper safety procedures with numerous tools and equipment associated with small engines. Students
will be working on both 2 cycle and 4 cycle engines, with an emphasis on 4 cycle engines. Students are expected to bring their
own small engines to the class to be worked on.
